"A new study finds that both drugs and genetic manipulation can turn the homosexual behavior of fruit flies on and off within a matter of hours."
Is this for real? Scientists spending time trying to manipulate the sexual desires of an insect is not my idea of time or money well spent. We support public colleges and universities with our tax dollars, then after they spend four years getting a degree they go out into the real world and make fruit flies gay? Isn't that why they are called fruit flies in the first place? (Yes, I know that comment was politically incorrect, but you have to admit it was funny.) I would almost guess that they applied for and received a federal grant to fund their study.
How did they go about doing this? Did they have the fruit flies go through counseling? Perhaps they made them watch tractor pulls, professional sports and other "macho" things. I can't imagine what this is going to accomplish. After everyone has embraced the gay community, now we want to give them a pill to make them straight again? I don't think so. The competition was tough enough in college the way it was, now imagine with all the gay guys hitting on those cute coeds! I liked the odds the way they were.
That aside, it is an absolute waste of money to be doing studies like this, when they could be doing genetic experiments to find cures for things like, oh say....cancer? Perhaps diabetes, or debilitating muscular diseases?
Let's just put our tax dollars where they belong, growing mold in outer space and funding our presidential candidates. I don't think we should do crazy stuff like this fruit fly thing.
Just my opinion.
